AstraZeneca said on Thursday it will pay $1.4 billion to settle lawsuits over its Nexium drugmaker’s failure to warn consumers about a rare heartburn medication that was linked to a higher risk of heartburn.

The company will pay $1.4 billion to resolve the Nexium maker’s lawsuits and $1.4 billion to resolve the case in the United States.
“AstraZeneca has long been a leader in the medical and pharmaceutical industry and we’re pleased to be part of the $1.4 billion settlement,” said Sidney Taurel, AstraZeneca’s chairman and chief executive. “We have long been proud of our ability to innovate and deliver better health care.”
The $1.4 billion settlement was announced in June, and it has already been filed in federal court in Washington. AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $1.3 billion to resolve the cases. AstraZeneca said that the settlement “does not constitute a new and distinct legal action, nor does it change the law, nor will it change the standard of care for physicians prescribing the drugs.”
